Myra Landau and Mário Pedrosa: A Shared Vision of Art and Freedom

Exploring Myra’s Artistic Philosophy Through the Lens of Brazil’s Most Influential Art Critic

The Instituto Guimarães Rosa México, in collaboration with the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), and the Plataforma Mario Pedrosa Atual, recently hosted a panel discussion titled Myra Landau y Mário Pedrosa: Geometría Sensible, exploring the political and philosophical contexts that shaped Myra Landau’s work and her deep connection to Brazilian art critic and thinker Mário Pedrosa (1900–1981).

Pedrosa—regarded as one of the most important Latin American thinkers of the 20th century—was a defender of abstract and experimental art, and a strong believer in the idea of art as a “vital necessity”. He promoted socially engaged and non-dogmatic artistic practices, which had a profound impact on Myra’s vision.

The panel brought together curator Pilar García (MUAC), artist and writer Luis Felipe Ortega, and researcher Luiza Mader, to discuss how Pedrosa’s thinking intersected with Myra’s artistic path—not only in her embrace of abstraction, but in her belief that art must be lived, embodied, and emotionally resonant.
